Favorite Ginger Cat Names

These are some of my favorites, along with popular names among readers. Of course, I've already mentioned my cat, Jazzy, which fits either a boy or the rarer ginger girl.

Amber – Have you ever seen the 1993 movie, Jurassic Park? Amber is a fossilized tree resin with a yellow-orange color. And we can make dinosaurs. :)

Chuck Norris – You know the joke, right? If Chuck Norris were a cat he would have ten lives. Although he has sometimes appeared as a blond, he's often a redhead and has a red beard.

Cinnabun - The Simpson's parody of the Cinnabon bakery chain. Either name works well for a kitty with cinnamon colored fur.

Clementine –  This sweet fruit is the most popular variety of tangerine, and a cute orange kitty name. As a bonus, people who meet your kitty will be singing, "Oh, my darling," if anyone still remembers that song - hopefully they don't!

Henna - Henna is a dye from the henna tree, Lawsonia inermis, used to color skin and hair for millennia.

Honey – Does your cat have a sweet disposition? Honey can vary a lot in color, and darkens as it ages, but it often has a golden color. As a cat name, Honey is a better choice for an orange cat than Sugar. Don't you think?

Peanut - An adorable name for a ginger cat.

Peanut Butter - You knew this was coming, right?

Pekoe - As in Orange Pekoe, or "OP" tea. This is a type of black tea, so a black and orange cat named Orange Pekoe would be a good pun.

Skittles - Fun candy in a rainbow of flavors, including orange and strawberry.

Sorbet - Sorbet is a cute cat name. Sherbet's less creamy cousin with a fancier name, orange sorbet can be made from a mixture of orange juice and simple syrup (sugar and water). All you need is an ice cream maker from Amazon to complete the process. While you're at it, you could make some catnip flavored frozen yogurt for your kitty, too. It even makes frozen drinks, too. Bonus!

Starburst - This reminds me of two things, Starburst candy, and of course, the colors of the sun. Either way, it's a suitable name for your feline companion.

Ginger Cat Names Based on Superheroes

via GIPHY

Some superheroes wear orange, red, or yellow. Others harness the power of the sun or get their power from something orange.

Some of these characters have red hair, and others are even actually orange.

If you're looking for a nerdy (or is it geeky?) name for your striped ginger wonder cat, consider using a superhero as inspiration.

Alpha - One of the Mad Thinker's robots has orange skin.

Asha - Zoroastrian god of fire. In the Marvel Universe, Asha is a male character with yellow hair, fiery wings, and orange skin. Despite the male persona, I would treat it as unisex and use this for either a boy or a girl.

Black Widow - In the Marvel films, Scarlett Johansson portrays the character Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff).

Captain Citrus - He lives in an orange grove, drinks orange juice for breakfast, and uses solar power.

Captain Orange Pants - This is one of my nicknames for Jazzy the cat. And it suits him.

Daredevil - Daredevil wears a red costume (the comic character originally wore yellow and red with black).

Iron Man - Iron Man's armored suit is red and gold.

Kitty Pryde - A superhero in the X-Men series by Marvel Comics. She's not orange, and this name would suit any cat, but the lion pride reference is why I included her here.

Lockheed - In Marvel comics, Lockheed is a fire-breathing alien dragon about the size of a cat.

Ms. Marvel (Sharon Ventura) - At one point, Sharon Ventura mutates into an orange-skinned, hairless She-Thing. When she does have hair, it's orange-red.

Scarlet Witch - Wanda Maximoff is a Marvel character known as the Scarlet Witch.

Buttercup - Buttercup is a fictional orange tabby cat belonging to Primrose Everdeen in The Hunger Games series of books and movies. Ulysses - The orange kitty from Inside Llewyn Davis (2013).

Orange Cat Names Based on Game of Thrones

A few redheads have figured prominently in the popular HBO series Game of Thrones.

An added bonus in using these character's names is that even names that might sound "normal" are often spelled with a twist.

Before we get to the redheads in the series, you could name your boy kitty after Daenerys Targaryen's dragons.

If you've got a girl, how about Daenerys, the Mother of Dragons, herself? A.K.A:

  • Daenerys Stormborn
  • Dany
  • Khaleesi
  • Mhysa

Her dragons are:

  • Drogon
  • Rhaegal
  • Viserion

Now, on to the redheads and the actors who portray them.

Males

  • Eddison Tollett (Ben Crompton) (Included due to his red beard.)
  • Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen)
  • Lannister Soldier (Ed Sheeran)
  • Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen)
  • Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju)

Females

  • Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley)
  • Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer)
  • Melisandre "The Red Priestess" (Carice van Houten)
  • Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner)
  • Ygritte (Rose Leslie)

Spicy Names for Spicy Cats

Do you have a particularly active feline? One that goes from zero to 1,000 in no time?

Does your cat have a bit of a temper?

If either one of those is true, these would be purrfect. These names also work if your cat's coat reminds you of a particular spice color.

In addition to spices, I've included some spicy hot food dishes as well.

If your cat likes to "kick it up a notch" (and hey, what cat doesn't?), some of these are my favorites.

Banana - Banana peppers are mild, and the pickled version is delicious on sandwiches. They resemble bananas in shape and are often yellow, hence the name, but they can be red or orange. Go ahead, be different, and name your orange kitty Banana. People will ask you why.

Buffalo Wing - Buffalo wings are famous for their spicy, orange tinted sauce.

Burrito - Tortillas filled with good stuff.

Cajun - Cuisine from Louisiana that is often spicy and hot.

Caliente - Because spices can be hot (picante is used for spicy, but I like this one).

Capsicum - The genus Capsicum ("the pepper") is in the nightshade family. It includes banana, bell, cayenne, and chili.

Cardamom - A cousin to ginger.

Cayenne – A popular type of Capsicum often used in Cajun cooking. If your ginger kitty has some CAT-itude, this spice could be a good name.

Chili Pepper - They're red hot, and so is your kitty. This one's a natural.

Chimichanga - A type of deep fried burrito, often served with salsa or hot sauce.

Chipotle - A smoke-dried Jalapeño.

Cinnamon - One of my favorite spices. For something slightly different, try Cinnamon Toast, Cinnamon Loaf, or Cinnamon Roll.

Enchilada - The whole enchilada.

Galengal - Another cousin to the ginger plant, with a stronger, more citrusy flavor.

Garlic - Garlic is bad for kitties, but it makes a cute name for any feline, including gingers.

Ginger – I'll just leave this one right here.

Habanero - Once crowned the hottest pepper of them all, it has lost that title as new varieties have been created.

Heinz 57 - This condiment has a dark orange-yellow hue to it and a distinct flavor among sauces.

Honey Mustard - One of my favorite dipping sauces, and appropriate for a milder, gentler, kitty of the orange purrsuasion.

Horseradish - Not stuff, and a cousin to mustard.

Hot Sauce - Plain and simple.

Jalapeño - A flavorful type of chili.

Krachai - A ginger cousin, it goes by names such as fingerroot and Chinese ginger.

Mace - A spice made from the reddish seed covering of the nutmeg seed, mace can color food orange, similar to the way saffron does.

McCormick - A huge spice company with a number of brands under their wing.

Meatball - There's an old television commercial using the line, "That's a spicy meatball!" This isn't a name I'd normally pick for a cat. But... given the connection between gingers and spiciness, I think it works.

Mojo - Any of a number of sauces of varying spiciness, originating in the Canary Islands. In Cuban cooking, Mojo Criollo recipes often include sour orange juice.

Morita - A type of chipotle from the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

Nutmeg - A slightly sweet spice used to flavor many foods. It's not orange or red, but there's a red waxy webbing or netting that covers it (used to make mace), and ground nutmeg itself can have a reddish-brown look to it.

Onion - Onions, along with garlic, are also bad for cats. Oh, the irony.

Pad Thai - A delicious stir fry with rice noodles, garlic, and red chili.

Panang - Panang is one of my favorite dishes. It's a type of salty-sweet red Thai curry with a peanut flavor. It's has an orange hue to it, and it's delicious.

Paprika (Prika, Rika) - Paprika makes food less boring by adding color and flavor. Your kitty does the same for your life, your home, and your happiness.

Pepper - Another simple and to the point choice.

Pepperoni - An American salami, spiced with chili.

Pepperoncino - Inside every Papa John's pizza box is an Italian pepperoncino, grown in Turkey.

Picante - Spicy, as in picante sauce.

Piper - A genus of pepper plants including the plant that produces black pepper and white pepper.

Purrito - The cat version of a burrito.

Saffron – Saffron is a spice as well as a color. As a color, it's orange tone can be seen in the robes worn by the Theravada Buddhist monks, as well as on the flag of India. As a spice, it's derived from the saffron crocus, and often turns food (and your plate) a golden-yellow color.

Spice - Because it's so obvious you might skip it.

Sriracha - A popular hot sauce originating from Thailand.

Taco - Because tacos are awesome.

Tamale - As in, that's one hot tamale!

Taquito - A "little taco," rolled up. Also known as a flauta.

Turmeric - Turmeric is a flowering plant in the ginger family. You can often find this spice as a deep yellow-orange powder.

Wasabi - Japanese horseradish which goes with sushi.

Zatarain - Zatarian's is a spice and food products company founded in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Oranges, Tangelos, and Tangerines

via GIPHY

The color orange gets its name from the fruit of the same name. Some of the many varieties of oranges and their relatives make good names for kitties with orange coats.

Oranges

Cara Cara - Cara Cara oranges are a type of navel. They have a pinkish-red flesh and are grown in California's San Joaquin Valley.

Cleopatra - The Cleopatra mandarin is a citrus tree used for root stock to grow orange, grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon. The fruit is too sour to eat, but may be used in juice.

Mandarin or Mandarine - There are many types of mandarins, including hybrids and crosses, with interesting names.

Navel - I'm not too keen on Navel as a name for a kitty, although Navella might work.

Valencia - On the other hand, Valencia sounds like a good one!

And then there are blood oranges. Varieties of blood orange include:

Moro

Sanguinello

Tarocco

Tangerines

The tangerine is a subgroup of the mandarin orange, and there are quite a few varieties of tangerines.

Clementine - The most popular variety of tangerine has a glossy, dark orange peel. If your red kitty is popular with guests, or likes to be the center of attention, Clementine is a good name.

Cutie - Cuties, or California Cuties, are marketed towards children as healthy snacks. They can be Clementines, Murcotts, or Tangos.

Dancy - If you're naming your kitty based on color, Dancy tangerines have a dark red-orange peel. Purrfect for a dark red kitty. If naming based on personality, they are both tart and sweet.

Fairchild - The Fairchild mandarin is a hybrid of a Clementine mandarin and an Orlando tangelo. It's easy to peel and the name makes a cute moniker for any pet.

Halo - Halos are the same idea as Cuties, just from a different company, which used to market them as Cuties. It's all rather confusing.

Honey - Also known as Honey Mandarin, Honey Tangerine, or Murcott, it's a very sweet and juicy variety for your very sweet kitty.

Royal Mandarin - A tangor, which is a cross between a tangerine and an orange. They are also called Temples.

Ruby Tango - A cross between a blood orange and clementine.

Satsuma - They have a lighter color peel and bright orange flesh, and are often sold in cans as Mandarin oranges. I think Satsuma is a cute name.

Tango - A seedless, irradiated mutation of the Murcott mandarin.

Tangelos

Tangelo - A tangelo is a cross between a mandarin and a grapefruit or a mandarin and a pomelo.

Mandelo - The Mandelo, or "cocktail grapefruit," is a cross between a Dancy/King mixed mandarin and a pomelo.

Minneola or Honeybell Tangelo - A hybrid of the Bowen grapefruit and the Dancy tangerine.

Orlando tangelo - A cross between a Duncan grapefruit and a Dancy tangerine.

Uniq - The Jamaican tangelo is a natural hybrid, also known as ugli fruit, uglifruit, or uniq fruit.

Naming Your Ginger Cat Based on Color

Orange kitties can be any color from a deep red or a dark reddish brown to a light cream color or buff. In my book, shades of yellow, orange, and red colors are fair game for the name game. Right? Below are some ideas.

Big Red - Purrfect for a big cat, like a Maine Coon.

Brown (Brownie) - For cats that are a rich, dark shade of brown or reddish-brown, similar to the coat of some wild felines. By some definitions, brown can be considered a dark shade of orange.

Buff - Some orange cats are a pale orange-brown color, called buff. It's also cool to say, "My cat is Buff."

Buffy - Good for a female buff colored kitty, and bonus points if you're a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Canary - While I've never seen a canary yellow cat, this ironic name would be cute for a lighter colored "yellow" kitty.

Maggie - Magenta is a shade of red.

Ocher (or Ochre) - Ocher refers to a class of natural earths containing iron oxide, or the color of that material. Used as a pigment, it ranges in color from pale yellow to orange or reddish-yellow.
