How long will a cat stick around if you stop feeding it?

by Anonymous

A cat started hanging around my house a couple weeks ago. He obviously belongs to someone. Very friendly, fixed, and has a flea collar on. I started feeding him a little because he was always hungry when he came over. Now, he's at my house 24/7.

I don't want to steal someone else's cat, so I stopped feeding him a little over 2 days ago. Every time I go outside or come home from work he's sitting there meowing for food. Shouldn't he have gone home by now? I'm wondering how long this is going to last, because I feel bad walking outside and not feeding him anymore, when he's obviously hungry

You may not be this cat's only extra food source, but eventually, he will learn that this location doesn't give him what he needs anymore. That doesn't mean he won't come around, but you'll probably see him less. Unless, of course, he's grown attached to you, which cats will do, especially when you feed them.
