Why is my cat urinating outside litter box?

by Carolyn
(Ontario Canada)

About a year ago, I rescued four young female kittens. They are still unaltered. Recently, I have noticed very strong smelling urine in places that it shouldn't be.

Places such as my computer chair, a bucket I had in the hallway, on top of my nightstand, on my daughter's bed, etc.

One night while lying on the couch watching TV, one of them crawled over top of me to get to the front of me for pets and when she did, she actually "let go" of urine on me. That's to say I believe I know which one it is.

In the last month or two I have noticed all four have pretty much gone through their heat with the last one still finishing. The kitten I suspect and the one finishing their heat at present have been very vocal to the point of hearing them down my hall corridor. The one that I detect has also been extremely sucky lately.

Please help. I don't have a lot of money and I don't want to get rid of my girls. Thank you so much for your time,
Carolyn

My thoughts: I'm sorry to hear your cat is having problems. I highly recommend getting the cats fixed as soon as possible, but I'm sure you know that.

If only one cat is urinating inappropriately (the one you suspect), I think it's possible she has some sort of medical problem. When a cat urinates on you or your belongings, it's often a sign.

I'm sure you don't want to hear this because of the expense, but I would put a call in to the vet and see what the guidance is.

I hope that helps and please let us know what happens.

P.S. Thank you for rescuing them!

Had the same issue with my kitten
by: Danielle

I have two older kittens (1 yr old) that I rescued a year ago. Both female. My Orangie girl went into heat early and would urinate outside the litter box, like on the couch, etc. I caught her in the act doing it so I knew which one was responsible for it. My calico kitten I never saw go into heat. I have heard that females can pee outside the litterbox if they are not spayed. I guess, maybe trying to attract a male. I've had several female cats & never had this problem before. I had my orangie girl spayed and it completely stopped. Maybe your kitten is having the same problem but, it also might be medical related. I would get her checked out & get them all spayed as soon as you can. It might help this problem and it can avoid them getting cancer in the future. Maybe there is some kind of assistance in your area that you can get help to get them spayed. A lot of shelters offer assistance. Good luck with them!

Could be urinary problems
by: Jim W.

The only time I've heard of a cat urinating on their "owner" is when they've got some kind of urinary tract issue (infection, cystitis, crystals, etc.) or they're under heavy stress.

Does a heat cycle qualify as heavy stress? Maybe, but I'd err on the side of caution and assume it's a urinary problem.

I agree on getting them all fixed as soon as possible. It can prevent problems now and down the road.
