Why does my 15 year old neutered cat exhibit mating behavior?

Why is my 15-year-old neutered cat (since a year old) exhibiting mating symptoms (which he does on a soft afghan) every day? Bentley (male neutered since a year old) has begun exhibiting mating symptoms (on a soft afghan) every day.

He does have a couple of non-cancerous nodules on his body. He also is an outside-inside cat because of my discovering him 14 years ago living under a church bus and his insistence on going outside.

Some neutered male cats continue to exhibit mounting behavior toward other cats (male or female), or objects (blankets, pillows, etc.), or even human legs. If your cat just started this behavior, it's possible he has recently encountered the scent of one or more female cats, and this has triggered this response.
