Why are my cat's eyes fixed an dilated?

My cat is a 17-year-old Maine Coon male. Due to his age, I realize these things happen such as hearing loss and eyesight failure. But his eyes are fixed and dilated almost overnight! How is this possible?

It could be neurological

If it's just one eye, it could be a stroke. If it's both eyes, I would guess it's something neurological, although I supposed it could be strictly eye-related. I would take him to a vet.
