Cat with infection on skin following vaccination

by Shay

I had my cat vaccinated for rabies and 4 in 1 the last 2 years. After the vaccination, a spot suddenly appeared in my cats stomach near the leg area where the injection site is.

Overnight it got bigger until morning. We went to the vet who said its more likely a side effect. The patch got bigger and skin got soggy and got removed.

They shaved and cleaned the area, gave her antibiotics and pain reliever and I was tasked to place gauze with honey to advance the recovery every day for 2 weeks. For context, the size of the open wound is around 3x2 inches wide.

Fast forward to now, she suddenly started limping. After 2 days, a black spot appeared near her butt/ tail, right area (near where the vaccination site was). Overnight it got bigger and the skin became soggy and fell off.

Went to the vet and they shaved the area, cleaned it and gave her antibiotics, pain reliever and was also asked to keep cleaning it with diluted iodine and put some honey on it. The size of the wound is around 1.5 x 1.5 inches.

The doctor says it's a bacterial infection and doesn't know much about what it is. We are going back after a few days and hoping to get more answers.

Does anyone have a clue what it is and why did it happen again (she is a white domesticated cat 10 years old and healthy weight).

Photo is quite icky so I don’t know if I should share it.

Strange that it's near the injection site, so I think maybe this was caused by the needle. Maybe there is a pocket of skin or some scar tissue that is trapping the bacteria, causing the infection to return.
