4 month old Persian kitten peeing outside the litter box

My kitten is named Smokey (male), who is 4 months old. He has no issues in eliminating feces in a litter box, but recently he has started peeing outside it.

He is not spraying or marking since he sits in a perfect squat position and pees outside the box, mostly on top of plastic bags. Sometimes he pees in a corner of the kitchen or balcony plain floor.

My thoughts: I'm sorry to hear that Smokey is having problems. Have you taken him to the vet for a diagnosis?

In my experience, quite often this is caused by a medical problem (urinary tract infections or other issues), so I would contact your veterinarian for guidance on this one.

I hope he recovers quickly.

A 4 month old kitten rarely has a urinary infection. He might not like the litter you are using or the box isn't scooped out often enough and smells. Mine use 1 box for urinating and another one for pooping. I have found that all my cats will urinate on plastic bags and cardboard boxes. I don't know why but I don't leave any type of plastic anywhere. The litter they seem to like best is clumping litter. I get Scoop Away in Costco. Petco also sells this type of litter. They don't like anything that is granular. Hope this helps.
