18 year old cat urinating on sofa

My 18-year-old cat has started to urinate on my sofa. She has once done it in front of me! She is a house cat and gets very stressed if she leaves her surroundings.

She is content and purrs a lot. Is there any need to take her to the vet?

My thoughts: I'm sorry to hear your cat is not doing well. A major change in behavior is always cause for concern, but even more so in an older cat. A number of elderly cat health problems can cause a cat to urinate outside the litter box.

Many readers have reported that the first visible sign of illness in their elderly cat was inappropriate urination, such as on the sofa as you describe. Some have gone so far as to say they feel peeing in front of them was a cry for help.

If she were my cat, I'd call the vet for guidance.

Please let us know how it goes with her.
