Why is my female cat suddenly hissing and growling at my male cat?

We have two cats that have been living together and getting along for six years. The male cat has been given a sedative and tomorrow he will go for surgery to have a tooth removed. Suddenly, our female cat is hissing and growling at him. This has never happened before. Usually, they play and fight and groom each other.

I had 2 cats that were raised together for 3 years and got along great. Then when one of the cats developed lung cancer and had to be taken to the vet regularly to have fluid drained, the other cat wanted nothing to do with him. They used to cuddle up together all of the time. It was very sad to see.

Hopefully things will settle down again soon.

The sedative is probably making him act differently from how he normally does, and that is disturbing to her.
