Why is my cat's mouth hanging open?

I adopted my Sally Mae five to six years ago. She rescued me! I love her so much! She has asthma and I use an inhaler on her per the vet. Lately though, she's been opening her mouth... not normally.

Panting or Sniffing?
by: Kurt (Admin)

When Jazzy leaves his mouth hanging open, it's usually one of two things.

1. He's been using his Jacobson's organ to analyze a scent he's interested in.

2. He's panting, because he's just been running like a crazy cat all over the house. It's rare he exerts himself that much.

Neither one of the above last long when they happen.

If it were more frequent, or for no apparent reason, or he showed other signs of problems, I'd take him to the vet to get him checked out.

Given your cat's history of asthma, I think there's more reason to contact the vet.
