Why does my cat rub his butt in my face?

by Sherry Phillips

My cat is very affectionate and loving. Frequently, he walks up my body to my chest, rubbing his face and shoulders against my face. This behavior I understand.

The irritating behavior is when he repeatedly rubs his butt in my face. What does this behavior mean and how do I discourage it without discouraging his sweet, loving behavior?

He's doing what cats do
by: Jim W.

It sounds like he's doing what cats do when transferring scent. He would do this with another cat as well. When my cats do this to me, I put my arm up alongside their bodies and move them gently to where their butt is not in my face. I've never had a cat stop being affectionate because of that.
