My cat rips up the carpet

by Anonymous

I found a cat two years ago. He was about 4 months old. We had him neutered and chipped, and his shots are up to date. He stayed out all night and came back about 6 am, and stayed in until 10 pm.

The last two weeks, he doesn't go out at night anymore. He cries by the doors. We open the door and he runs, hiding under bed.

The bad part is he starts clawing and scratching up our carpets by the doors. He also has gotten more aggressive. We are at our wit's end.

Add more scratching pads
by: Jim W.

To discourage my cats from scratching the rugs, I add a horizontal scratch pad near the rug. I also have a few vertical scratching posts throughout the house.

ways to keep cat from scratching at carpet?
by: Anonymous

Any suggestions for discouraging cat from scratching at rugs?? I am thinking of getting a squirt gun. I just happened to see my cat getting ready to scratch the rug this morning; I clapped my hands, yelled "no" and he calmly went to his "scratch box". Interesting.

Something scared him
by: Jim W.

I'll bet something out there scared him. It's probably a feral or group of feral cats invading his territory. In certain areas of the US, it could be coyotes, foxes, or cougars. Send out a search party in the evening and see what you can find.
