Introducing a new cat

I have a fixed male cat since he was a kitten and is now 9 years old. He has always lived with my dog who recently passed and he seems off. We are thinking about getting a cat to keep him company as we do not want another dog at this time.
He has never been near or seen another cat as he is an indoor cat so not sure how to approach this. Get a kitten, older cat, same-sex or different-sex? Any help would be appreciated.
