Grieving Momma Cat

by Rob Notter
(East Pittsburgh, PA)

I feed and shelter (garage) a colony of feral cats. Today, the original Momma cat (we call her Momma Cat) had one of her juveniles killed. She has been hard grieving, looking for her juvenile kitten and very restless.

She feels very trusting of us, sleeping on our lap etc, but now her personality is completely altered. This is of course very understandable, but does anyone have any suggestions on what we can do to help her?

Thank you for that answer! And you're right. She is much improved today, hoping back to normal soon. Any thoughts on me bringing her in to live with my house cats? I have 6.

Thanks, Sally F. Sounds like excellent advice. Worried now because she has not showed up last night nor today. Her normal routine was to stay close by and eat up all the petting and attention. Hoping she arrives back safe!

Distract her

The only thing that really seems to work reliably is time. In the meantime, you can try distracting her with toys, play, and treats. I hope she feels better soon.
