Don't want my cat to be lonely

I have a very loving and sweet Persian male about 5 years old. Because I do some traveling, my kids come in to make sure he's fed but do not spend much time with him.
My question is, does he get lonely if I am gone for 2 or 3 days when he is only getting fed? I have considered bringing in another cat as a companion for when I am away. He is the most precious cat I have ever owned.
