Why does my cat have zigzagged hair instead of straight?

She is a black tuxedo cat. Her fur stands out from her body and when you look at one individual hair it is zigzagged.

It's in the genes
by: Mad Cat Lady

Cats have different types and textures of fur, just like humans. Some cats have a thick undercoat, some don't. Some have very long guard hairs, some don't. And some have kinky or curly hair or hairs that appear to be crimped.

This crimped hair can have a zigzag appearance. Some even have crimped or curly whiskers. It's all in the coat genetics. Check out the Selkirk Rex breed. Cats are fascinating.
