Using sand as a litter

I use sand as a litter as I can't afford litter. I live in a flat and there are very few areas where I can find sand. So my question was, is it okay to reuse the sand after drying it in the sun (of course after taking out the poop)? Or the odor remains in the sand? What should I do?

With the price of cat litter, I've thought about using (and reusing) sand instead. My concern is residual urine and feces would remain in the sand, along with bacteria and of course, the odor. My idea would be to wash the sand first and then dry it in the sun. I have not tried this yet, but it makes sense to me.
