How to change a cat's habit with litter box?

I just got a cat today and then I learned from the previous owner that this cat hates the sand-texture. She always used a lifting type of litter box but with no sand.


I don't want him to keep doing this because he will dirty himself easily like that, especially since he's a long hair. How can I make him get used to using a normal litter box?

Right now he hates to even touch the sand. The previous owner says he learned this habit from his mother.

He may never change his dislike for the sand, but what you can do is put two litter boxes side-by-side, one with clay litter and one with the one he normally uses. Once he's using the new box regularly, take away the old one and see how it goes.
