17 year old cat suddenly stopped using litter box

She will pee and poop on newspaper. I've had her to the vet three times in the last month. They said she's very healthy for her age. There have been no changes in the household.
I took away her steps to our bed when she peed on the bed. We have a large dog crate in the bedroom where her litter box is. She started peeing and pooping on the bottom, so I covered it with newspaper.
I have bought six different litter boxes, placed them throughout the house trying to find her a 'preferred spot', bought every different kind of litter we can find. Nope, still pees on the bottom of the crate, newspaper or not.
