UTI stopped box use

by melissa
(st. louis MO)

How do I get my cat to start using her litter box again?
She stopped after 15 years of normal use, because of a prolonged UTI. She is 15 and is in the beginning stages of kidney failure.
Thanks, Melissa and Curaca

My Thoughts:

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. If her condition causes her discomfort either ongoing or periodically, it may be very difficult to retrain her to use the litter box.

If she is not experiencing discomfort, then she can be retrained. For extreme cases, it may be necessary to use confinement.

Nancy Wigal has more experience with this than anyone I can think of. Please see her articles on feline UTI and litter box retraining through confinement. Follow those steps.

I hope that helps.
