Lesser of two evils?

Some background first. There are two 'stray cats' at my boyfriend's mom's home. I say 'stray' because one has been coming around for nearly two years, the other for around 6 months. They both clearly depend on her for a source of food and shelter and they are around the house all day.

Both cats are incredibly affectionate and soak up belly rubs and head pets like a dog. I'm guessing they are either runaways or abandoned cats with how trusting they are with humans. I don't think they belong to someone in the neighborhood because as I said, they rarely leave the property and clearly rely on us for food.

My dilemma is this. My boyfriend's mom is moving and cannot take the strays with her. Do my boyfriend and I adopt them, giving them a permanent home and know they will be taken care of but at the same time take them out of the neighborhood they know so well, potentially risking them running away?

Or do we leave them in the space and area they know and feel safe in but risk the new renters not bothering to feed them or look after them?
Which is the more responsible decision?

I of course would love to adopt them both but ultimately want what's best! In a perfect world, the new renters would adopt them but that would be rare, let's be real.

Anyway, thoughts??

Keep them. Bring them in the house. They already know you. That way they will be safe and not hurt out in yard. Don't count on other people being kind. It does not always work that way.

Lesser Than Two Evils

I agree with Sally. The cats may know their present environment very well, but most felines bond to family they trust and love. If these two cats trust you and seek out your attention, it should not be long before they adjust to their new environment. There are many videos on Youtube and perhaps information here that show the suggested way of introducing a cat to a new home. You love these two fur balls and they love you: a perfect match. Keep them indoors until they adjust to their new home. They may hide at first until they adjust to their new home. With love and treats, they will be seeking your affection again. Provide them with hiding spots such as cardboard boxes. in)

Adopt them, they know you and keep them inside where you know they are safe. You will have so much love from these, you will never be sorry.

Adopt them

You can't rely on what others might do, only on what you can do, so I would say adopt them yourself.
