Transfer Factors

"Transfer factors can be very effective because they have been shown to both boost and suppress the immune system."

-Dr. Kenneth Bock, co-author of The Road to Immunity

Editors Note: When I first heard about transfer factors, and the idea of taking them as dietary supplements, I dismissed it as "voodoo science." But I've been researching this for several months, and I'm forced to say that I'm impressed.

What are Transfer Factors and How Do They Work ?

Discovered in 1949 by Dr. H. Sherwood Lawrence, transfer factors are an integral component of a healthy immune system. They are small protein molecules that act as messengers, alerting the body to the presence of foreign invaders. The immune systems of cats, dogs, cows, people, and other mammals use these proteins to control the immune response. In addition to ramping up the immune system to defend the body, these proteins also modulate an overactive immune system. Essentially, they call the immune system to action, and then call off the attack at the appropriate time.

"We found 74% less reported illness and 84% less reported use of antibiotics."

David Markowitz, M.D. upon reviewing patient histories.
In a healthy immune system, the body correctly identifies foreign invaders, such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Signals are sent throughout the body to attack the invader. The attack is called off when the invader is subdued. In addition, normal, healthy tissue is left unharmed.

But in some people, things don't go so well. In some cases, the immune system doesn't recognize foreign invaders or mutated cells. In those cases, the body succumbs to a disease, such as an infection, cancer, or strep throat.

In other cases, it doesn't stop fighting, or it launches a fight against normally harmless agents. If you have an allergy, you can relate to that. You feel sick as your body mounts an immune response to the offending agent. But a person without that allergy would have no reaction to that substance.

In still other cases, an immune system might mistakenly react to "friendly" cells and try to attack good tissue. This is what is known as an autoimmune disease, where the body is in a state of confusion over "self" and "non-self." Rheumatoid arthritis is one such ailment.

Transfer factors allow the immune system to properly recognize foreign invaders or mutated cells, fight against them, and then stop fighting when the job is done. In the case of an overactive immune system, they can suppress the reaction. In short, they modulate or balance the immune system, so that it reacts appropriately.

In this way, they are therefore essential to proper immune system function. Given that, it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that adding them to your diet, or that of your pet, would have a positive effect on the immune system. This is exactly what is experienced in medical practices and veterinary clinics around the world.

Hope for the World ?

In an article in The East African in December of 2000, special correspondent Sam Wainaina reported that ebola outbreaks in Uganda could have been better contained if this immune technology had been employed as part of the therapy. Ebola is a horrible virus with a high mortality rate.

According to Wainaina, if African doctors had paid more attention to the information discussed at the 11th International Congress on Transfer Factors held in Mexico in 1999, the (then recent) "outbreak could have been contained sooner." Wainaina goes on to say that "hope for Africa lies in what has been known in medical literature for over 50 years as Transfer Factors or TF."

This same sentiment of hope is echoed by top scientists, researchers, and medical doctors the world over for sufferers of immune system related issues. They point out that chronic diseases like HIV-AIDS, herpes, chronic fatigue syndrome, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and fibromyalgia, either cause or are caused by, an issue related to a weakened immune system. TF's have shown to balance the immune system in test after test.

For Your Pet Too ?

TF's are also being used by veterinarians on pets as a supplement to treatment on patients from cats to horses. And pet owners are reporting positive results when adding TF's to their dog or cat's diet.

The Future of Health Care, or a Reality Check ?

Can TF's live up to their promise? Well, some might say no, but unlike many dietary supplements, I'm having a difficult time finding people who have a complaint against this product, or the science behind it.

William Hennen, PhD, is a biochemist and transfer factor researcher for 4life Research, a company that researches, produces, and markets Transfer Factor and Transfer Factor Plus.

Dr. Hennen tells us...

"Transfer factors are the most exciting discovery in immunology. As the 21st century unfolds, transfer factor will be one of our greatest keys to health and well being."

4life Research is based in Utah, USA. With an exclusive and patented extraction process, and millions of product sold, they are one of the premier researchers, producers, and marketer of wellness products. They have an entire product line based around their patented flagship Transfer Factor formula.

According to 4life's web site...

"4Life's Transfer Factor naturally supports the body's immune system, communicating immune information more efficiently among the cells in the body, and ultimately enhancing the body's ability to withstand attacks on its health."
