Cat urinates same spot only when rug in place by: Anonymous
My cat urinates in the same spot by the front door but only if an area rug is down. I have removed the area rug and used products and vinegar solutions for a couple of weeks. As soon as I put an area rug down again, the cat urinated again.
If the floor is bare, he won't go. The problem is that I can't have that area bare, especially during the winter season and I can't block it with anything because it is the entrance door. As long as thier is no rug down, the cat will not go on the bare floor (marble). Help!!!
My Thoughts:
If your cat is urinating on an area rug when it's placed in a certain location, but not urinating in that location when the rug is not there (or urinating on the rug when it is elsewhere), then I can only assume this means one of two things...
Either your cat has developed a combination preference for both location and texture and is exhibiting inappropriate elimination behavior, or your cat is actually urine marking for territorial reasons.
If it's near the front door, this may be because outdoor cats (neighborhood cats, strays, ferals) or other animals are leaving their scent outside.
In addition to thoroughly washing down the front door and the area around it outside, possible solutions to this problem are:
1. Find an alternative texture that your cat will not use but also serves your purpose (does your cat urinate on every type of rug?).
2. Place a deterrent in the area. If you can't block the area, then place things in the area your cat doesn't like.
3. Use a Feliway Diffuser very close to the area. Feliway has been known to calm cats and reduce problems with inappropriate elimination and spraying.
Deterrents you can use are things like rosemary or other plants, or some of the other cat repellent options like SSSCAT.
