My cat likes to drag my son's stuff through the house

by Kym
(Micighan)

My cat is a 4 yr old neutered male. For about 2 yrs now we have noticed that our cat likes to go into our son's room and drag things down stairs and put in them in the living room. He will drag blankets, stuffed animals, pillows, bath robe.

I do not understand why he does this. We will put the items back in my son's room then we will leave and come back and they are right back in the living room. He some times will have 1 or 2 items in the living room like 2 stuffed animals.

It is only my son's items he does this with. He will also drag my son's stuff back up the stairs and leave them in the hallway.

Cats are good cleaners
by: Kurt (Admin)

Thanks Caren! Cats are good cleaners, so if we could just put them to work on the house instead of their fur, we'd be OK. Good luck with that!

Thanks Jan, for commenting.

Great Story !
by: Jan

Isn't it wonderful to have these great stories of fur babies to share ! Don't have a clue as to why your kitty might be fixated on your son's stuff, but my 'guess' would be association of scent of your son paired with comfort feeling of being with son? OR if your son is very young (and cat was there first) maybe hinting on jealousy?

I once read about a dog involved in a car accident with his family. All members of family were transported to hospital and dog ran off. Days, perhaps weeks, later, dog was found at the accident scene (uninjured, thankfully) and had gathered items of family from the car (ie: toys, comb, soda can, etc.) into a little "nest" while waiting for owners to come back.

Amazingly, the dog was eventually reunited with owners through the kindness of passersby who noticed his always being at the same spot and took it upon themselves to investigate.

Cat Dragging

Kurt your answer was fabulous and I never knew all of that!!!

I wonder....maybe they could form a cat cleaning company called "Mighty Meows?" MOL! Like "Mighty Maids" but with cats!

Why couldn't I have owned a cat that CLEANS?!

He's your housekeeper
by: Kurt (Admin)

Maybe he thinks he's the housekeeper and your son is untidy. There are a number of stories about cats being pack rats and moving objects, hiding them under the bed, and so on. Sometimes they seem to fixate on one person's stuff, other times it's almost anything.

There's this story submitted by a reader about a cat hiding stuff and there's an interesting one in the book, The Ultimate Cat Lover about Shotsie, the cat who picks up after everyone.

Any out of place clothing gets dragged to the hamper or under the bed. Shotsie even taught her housemate named Brut to bring his toys downstairs to be "fed" and then back upstairs again after mealtime.

I'm not sure why he's fixating on your son's stuff, but Caren might have an idea there... maybe he wants some of the attention your son gets for himself.

Cat Dragging
by: caren gittleman

Ok sorry, my bad....I think this was just a question you posted with no photo.

Either your cat is "hinting" he would like to get rid of your son...or.....he is using your son's items as "thank yous" for his food, etc.
