Has anyone used the Emery Cat board?

Has anyone used the Emery Cat board scratcher? There are many complaints posted online about the Emery Cat scratcher, so I thought I'd throw this question out there. If you've used the product, I'd like to hear your reviews.

There's a petition online to boycott the product due to a safety issue. It claims that the product is made from a foul smelling glue and glass particles, which cats might ingest.

At least one post in an online forum has said that a vet claimed that the product can damage a cat's claws.

The complaints about the product being cheaply made, deceptive online ordering practices, and many cats simply not showing interest in the product has also got my curiosity. Some have said that their cats do use it, but that it doesn't really trim their claws.

So, I thought I'd get some feedback. If you've bought this product and had a good or bad experience, let us know. Please let us know if you've used this product and give us a quick review or opinion on how your cat likes it (or does not).

Please have your say in the comments. Thanks!

No problems
by: Anonymous

I have one and my cat uses it. If I were to complain it would be that the 'emery' part doesn't last long and then it is just the bare corrugated. That's ok too; in fact it's better. That emery part creates a lot of debris that I see when I remove the board. My cat has never used it to the point of creating a dust cloud and she's never had any breathing issues; is healthy at 17.

The only scratcher my cat will use
by: Cheryl

I wish I could find refills for this scratcher or even the whole products itself! I buy various other scratchers bu my cat will not use them. She keeps trying the emery board scratcher but sadly is is worn out. It has stopped her from scratching our carpet and furniture but now that it is worn out, she is starting that bad habit again. I find it doesn’t keep her nails short, but it has helped stop the bad habits. I so wish these were sold again!

Emery Cat Refills
by: Regina

Bet Cat scratching post ever! The haters did not want competition. This never bothered my cats. They were in love with it. The cats and I are all grieving that we can’t find refills. Such a waste to discard the plastic base.

Competitors ran them out of business ???
by: Anonymous

I've been searching for years for this product.. can't locate the owners, etc. Used it for years then it suddenly was unavailable. My sincere opinion is the competitors drove them out of business with misinformation because it was the only product of its kind and worked so well people bought it instead of the cheap crappy cardboard scratchers which don't last!! Nothing to do with glue or glass.....only the criminals that like to run things their way. Would love to find it back on the market! But the FTC, government etc. always make sure the products we buy today aren't meant to last so big tech companies can keep selling pieces of >>>>! posted 3/7/2022

I've had mine for 12 years. All my cats love it. Perfectly safe for my babies. Can't find refills anywhere which is hugely disappointing. I looked online and in stores. Can't find any.

Bogus on line info
by: Jumglecat

I've used the EmeryCat board for over 10 yrs. It is awesome. Does not fall apart like the cheap corrugated cardboard scratchers and our Bengals love it. Each EmeryCat board lasts for over a year, which in the long run makes it much more affordable than the cheap boards. Unfortunately, disinformation has made this board difficult to impossible to find.

My cat loves it. I have bought two replacements but now they are not available. I like the base, it doesn't move around & my cat just digs right in or simply sits on it when he comes in.

Enery boards for cats
by: John P Calgary

The board's are cardboard with a mesh impregnated with emery stone. It isn't glass and it's not foul smelling or poison. We have used it with our cats for at least 10 years and the cats used it a lot.
Our cats remain healthy but we can no longer source refills. It seems disinformation spread on social media has killed the product.
Now we are back to cardboard which provides a sacrificial product in lieu of my furniture but shredded cardboard is a pain to clean up.
I wish they would bring it back.

I have used this scratching board for years and have ordered many refills, usually 2 at a time. Now I cannot find refills for it. I have found stores online that have the board but don't sell the refills!

Paws up Emery Cat Board
by: Ernest nl

My cat has used this board since she came into our home over 18 years ago. She loves it. Won’t use anything else. Searching for the main product or refills. Can’t understand the fuss over this product. An elder cat gets whatever she wants from me. Lucky enough to find two of the original product last week. I know where three refills are but the retailer won’t ship them to me? I offered to pay UPS fees. Whatever happened to Capitalism? Still looking . . . .

I have used paws up emery board for a long time
by: Lynn Drury Peters

But I attach it upright on the wall and the cats love it. Cats were not interested a lot until I put it on the wall. I could not get refills so had to continue to buy new ones. Right now it is shredded and I need another. Please BRING IT BACK.

Cat uses all the time
by: Tom Kearns

My 4 yr. old cat uses it all the time. It took a month or so before she really took to it. No longer does she scratch furniture. I can't say it dulled her claws much, but she runs to it constantly. It's worn out and I can't locate replacements!

3rd cat Loved it
by: Greg

I have had this product through 3 cats my first 2 cats were older and would like everyone else said they wouldn't touch it. My new kitten we rescued is an odd cat not odd in a bad way but totally different than my other cats. He just loves it. It is the only scratcher he will use. I can't find refills anywhere so if any of you comment posters that does not like the product would like to get some money back on any unused refill I would be glad to take it off your hands. Post your refills on Ebay and maybe I will find them.

Both of my cats loved this thing, and I'm so upset that I can't find the refills at Petco or anywhere anymore. I felt like it really helped keep their nails down more than cardboard. Super Bummed!

My cats love it!
by: Anonymous

My cats absolutely love it! I've had every scratcher known to man and they never paid attention to them. I got one when my oldest sisters where 7 and they started using it right away (I put catnip on it).

I recently rescued 2 more sets of sisters and 1 of the 2 yr olds uses it and both 1 yr olds use it. one's going nuts on it as I type. Don't believe the b.s. complaints. I've had it for 4 years and it's never damaged their nails, glue never made them sick (1 vet said) people complain and boycott everything. Not sure about ordering and mailing, just go buy one for $20 at Walmart or a Pet Supply store like Pet Supplies Plus. Once a year I replace the board itself for $10.

They also have a cool round one now that has a rail and ball to chase. I can't wait to get one! And Drug Mart and drug stores have cheaper ones for only $8. I got my aunt a few because her kitten was tearing up their $5000 leather furniture and she quit after about a month.

emery cat board

I have four cats. One of them destroyed the toy after five minutes. None of the cats would have anything to do with the emery cat board. No interest at all. I guess it was a waste of money.

by: Kurt (Admin)

Thanks Pat, your comment underscores the sentiment expressed in the postings around the Web that many cats show little interest in the scratching board itself (but some do like the mounted toy).

Emery cat
by: Pat Klynott

Saw this advertised on TV and thought it would be the greatest thing for my cat Felix. And thought maybe it would save me a lot of money and the hassle of taking him to the groomer to have his mails clipped. I was able to get it at CVS. My cat won't go near it. I tried everything. He likes the regular scratcher with the vertical post in the center.

This is the only scratcher my cat will use. I have tried basic cardboard, sisal etc. She won't touch them. Can't find refills anywhere!(that is why I gave it 4 stars) I've been looking for months. My cat is now destroying my Newell post.:(

Anyone who's cat loved this and found a replacement their cat liked I'd appreciate any info.

Won't touch it
by: Lauren

My cats won't even try the board out. They love the feather toy but play with it next to the board. Catnip and treats did nothing. Pretending to scratch at it myself, usually works, did nothing. They won't even give it a shot and prefer plain cardboard.

Emery Cat Scratch Pads
by: Steve

My two cats both used the Emerycat scratch board for a couple of years before it wore out. They still go to look at it, but they come away disappointed. I need refills and cannot find them.
I saw no bad effects from the boards, as mentioned in your own comments (smells, poisons, too abrasive etc). The product worked very well and is is a shame that there are now no refills.
If anyone finds refills please port the source on this page!!!

I would Have given it a 5, but you cannot find refills. Seems to me petstages quit producing refills so you have to buy complete setup. Greedy company! Currently looking for another scratching device for my cat. Will not buy any petstages products again!

4 claws down
by: Anonymous

My 2 Persian/Siamese kittens (8 mos old) didn't want anything to do with it though they did like the toy but shied away from the scratcher part. I think it might rip up their paw pads as well as their nails and cats being so smart know this without even trying. They love to scratch sisal, carpet, and cardboard scratchers so I think that's the reason. It felt extremely abrasive on the whole scratch part. If it were only abrasive where the nail goes(inside) it may have worked.
