Funny Cat Films and Other Feline Tales

Here are my picks for funny cat films. Some of these movies you may know, others you may have known about but forgotten, and still others may be unfamiliar to you.

Some people might say that some of these movies are silly and predictable, but sometimes, that just what you need to unwind.

I grew up with a dog, but looking back, I realize that I was a closet cat lover. As a kid, I loved movies with cats in them, and I identified with the feline characters.

I also had cat prints on my wall. I'm not sure why it took me so long to realize I was a cat lover. I'm sure it's because I'm just a lowly human.

Warning: There may be what some consider to be "plot spoilers" listed here.

  • The Aristocats Duchess, Thomas O'Malley the Alley Cat, Marie, Toulouse, and Berlioz, Scat Cat, the Chinese Cat, and others are the all-star feline cast of this Disney classic. I won't say much about it here. I'll simply refer you to my review on the Aristocats Special Edition DVD.
  • Cats & Dogs (Cats and Dogs) (2001) This movie is a cute and clever action/adventure/comedy staring Jeff Goldblum and Elizabeth Perkins, and features the voices of Tobey Maguire and Alec Baldwin.

Mr. Tinkles is an evil Persian cat ("Hello my puny-minded dog-faced opponents...") who has a master plan to spread an allergy that will make all people allergic to dogs. It's up to a beagle to join with some secret-agent dogs in order to foil this feline plot for world domination.

To me, the whole concept is too funny, and despite what some have said about the talking cats and dogs "getting old," I like it.
  • That Darn Cat (1965) "It takes a Siamese secret agent to unravel the PURR-fect crime!" This is a classic Disney movie and was the last Disney film for Hayley Mills in the 1960s, and the first Disney film for Dean Jones.

It was remade in 1997 with Christina Ricci, but didn't do all that well. It's hard to out-do an original Disney classic, and a Siamese is always going to upstage anyone, feline or human.

There are a number of Seal-Point Siamese cats used to play the role of DC (Darn Cat) in the original film. They are all of the traditional Siamese type, which is a bit stockier than the more streamlined, leaner modern Siamese.

In the traditional version of this fabulous cat breed, the head shape is not as triangular as the modern, and they are therefore referred to as "Applehead" Siamese.

The Balinese cat also has a modern and traditional line. As this breeder's site explains, the traditional Balinese are of a similar body type (and temperament) as the traditional Siamese.
  • Garfield - The Movie (2004) Garfield, everyone's favorite lasagna-loving fat cat, has to rescue Odie, who has been kidnapped. It stars Breckin Meyer and Jennifer Love Hewitt as Jon and Liz the vet, with Bill Murray doing the voice of Garfield.
  • Garfield - A Tale of Two Kitties (2006) The sequel to the first Garfield movie where Garfield goes to the UK ("The Ego has landed.") There are also several Garfield direct-to-video movies, and a number of TV specials and series as well.
  • The Cat From Outer Space (1978) The Cat From Outer Space features a feline extraterrestrial named Jake who needs to repair his ship in order to get home. His special collar allows him to communicate with humans.
